Fun, Culture, History Await in Ohio’s Hancock and Ottawa Counties

Ohio’s Hancock and Ottawa counties offer many exciting attractions and interesting points of interest.

The effort to designate Findlay, OH, as “Flag City, U.S.A.” began in the 1960s, inspired by city resident John B. Cooke. Through a community-wide movement spearheaded by the Women’s Division of the Chamber of Commerce, officials named Findlay as the Flag Capital of the United States on Flag Day, June 14, 1968. Congressman Jackson E. Betts issued a proclamation on June 12, 1968, making it part of the Congressional Record. House Joint Resolution No. 1003, introduced by Congressman Tennyson Guyer, then officially declared Findlay, OH, as “Flag City, U.S.A.” on May 7, 1974.

Findlay, OH, is also the home base for the Marathon Oil Company.

Visitors will also find the Hancock Historical Museum in Findlay, which features one of the largest collections of Findlay Glass. The Victorian mansion that houses the museum also features historic clothing, furniture, dolls, and toys, chronicling the history of Hancock County, OH, through exhibits of past industries and events of the late 1800s and early 1900s. The museum’s authentic log house is filled with everyday items used by early settlers and recalls the county’s early pioneer days.

Researchers can make use of the Mae Huston Local History Resource Center in Findlay, which contains books, photos, maps, and manuscript collections documenting Hancock County’s past. The Findlay Flag City Balloon Fest has been held for over two decades, and it features a hot air balloon competition.
